fish species and bait choice
Largemouth bass are Sardinia's premier fish and a favorite among anglers thanks to their aggressiveness, strength, and acrobatic jumps. The species was introduced to the island as early as the 19th century and has since developed into a stable population due to the warm climate, abundant baitfish, and plenty of crawfish.
Fishing is visual and fast-paced because bass often stay in shallow waters, from the surface down to about five meters. You'll find them near rocks, fallen trees, coves, and shallows – perfect places to ambush their prey. Strikes are brutal and often followed by fast runs and jumps.
When it comes to lures, classic bass methods work excellently here. Texas rig, dropshot, wacky rig, jigs, and creature baits are obvious choices near structures. For more active fishing, topwater lures, poppers, walk-the-dog, and swimbaits deliver truly exciting strikes. Natural colors are usually best, but crawfish colors in black/blue and purple are particularly effective.
Most fish weigh between 0.5–2 kilograms, but every year bass over both 2 and 3 kilograms are caught, the reasons why Sardinia has become a true bass favorite.
