Join us on a tropical fishing trip to Guyana, deep into the Amazon rainforest. Here awaits one of South America's most pristine fishing areas, where you'll fish for iconic species such as arapaima, payara, peacock bass, arowana, piranha, and several massive catfish species.

This is more than a fishing trip. It's an expedition right into the heart of the Amazon. You'll fish in jungle rivers where nature is raw, the waters are rich in nutrients, and fishing pressure is minimal. During the day, the sounds of the rainforest can be heard around the boat, monkeys move in the treetops, and predatory fish explode on the surface. In the evening, the group gathers at the camp and shares the day's experiences under the starry sky.

Our guides, employees and partners come from the village of Apoteri, located where the Essequibo meets the Rupununi in southern Guyana. The area is located in the Upper Takutu–Upper Essequibo region, and the village has about 250 inhabitants from the Makushi and Wapishana peoples.

People have lived in harmony with the river here for generations. At the same time, the area faces challenges, with young people being attracted to unsafe gold mines. Through our activities, we create sustainable jobs, strengthen local pride and contribute to preserving both culture and nature. When you travel here, you are part of something bigger.

  • Day 1

    Morning flight to Georgetown from Europe. Arrival in Guyana. Transfer from Cheddi Jagan (GEO) International Airport (or Ogle Airport) to Kanuku Suites for an overnight stay.

Fishing in Guyana

Fishing in Guyana is some of the most pristine and least exploited in the Amazon. Here you fish in jungle rivers and side channels where fishing pressure is extremely low and nature completely dominates the experience. The waters around Essequibo and Rupununi offer varied fishing with everything from explosive topwater fishing to heavy deepwater fishing.

The area is known for its rich biodiversity and large fish. You can target peacock bass in calmer backwaters, payara in flowing sections, and arapaima and giant catfish in deeper holes. The combination of clear structure fishing, current fishing, and deep pools makes each fishing day varied and exciting.

Food and drink

During your stay at the Amazon camp, all meals and drinks are included, adapted for active fishing days in a tropical climate. The food is nutritious, well-prepared, and served in a relaxed setting where the whole group gathers before and after the day's fishing.

Breakfast is served every morning before the day's adventure on the river. Lunch is taken during the fishing day, often out in the field, and dinner is served at the camp in the evening. The meals are designed to provide energy, recovery, and variety throughout your stay.

Water, soft drinks, and beer are included for the entire duration of your stay at the camp. After a day of fishing, you can sit down, unwind, and enjoy the evening with the group as the rainforest settles around the lodge.

Accommodation in the Amazon

Accommodation during the fishing trip to Guyana is a lodge/camp located in the heart of the Amazon rainforest, along the Upper Essequibo River, between King William Falls and the local village of Apoteri. The location provides direct proximity to some of the area's most productive fishing waters and creates a genuine jungle experience from morning to evening.

The lodge is designed for small groups of up to 12 guests, which provides a calm and personal atmosphere. You will stay in comfortable double rooms, adapted for two anglers per room, with simple but functional standards and views of the river or the surrounding rainforest.

After fishing days, there are common areas where the group can relax, review equipment, and share the day's experiences. There is a relaxed atmosphere here where nature is always present, from the sounds of the rainforest to the calm movements of the river just outside the camp.

The accommodation is designed to provide security, recovery, and proximity to fishing, without taking away the feeling of being deep in the Amazon.

Fish species in Guyana

In this area, they have documented an incredible 47 species – and you have the chance to catch them with everything from topwater lures and flies to jigs and natural bait.

These fish are some of the species we target.

Peacock Bass:
These Amazonian gladiators are a colorful and explosive trophy. Weighing over 8 kg, they attack topwater lures with violent force.

Arapaima:
These primeval giants can grow to over 180 kg and 4 meters in length. As they are delicate fish, we use barbless circle hooks and practice careful catch & release.

Payara:
Vampire-toothed predatory fish specializing in swift attacks. Watch them hunt topwater lures, crankbaits, and jigs in flowing water, sometimes with surface explosions in the heat of the chase.

Arowana ("Monkey Fish"):
Arowanas grow very large here and love topwater lures and flies.

Piranha:
For those seeking tough challenges, try the legendary piranha. Both Red-Eye and Black Piranha can weigh over 5 kg.

Silver Drum:
Jig on the bottom in deep holes and you can expect brutal strikes from these beautiful, shiny silver fighters. They can reach up to 6 kg and offer incredibly hard fights.

Giant Catfish:
There are more large and sought-after catfish here. Flat-Whiskered Catfish, Redtail Cat, Jau Cat, and the ultimate trophy: Giant Lau/Piraiba, also known as the "Freshwater Shark," which can weigh over 180 kg!

Fish species and bait choices

Fishing in the Amazon places high demands on equipment. The right rods, reels, lines, and lures ensure safer and more effective fishing.

Rod, reel, and line

Medium–Medium Light

Spinning rod 6’6”–7’6” with a reel for at least 100 m of 20–30 lb braided line. For smaller spinners, jigs, and minnows. Suitable for lighter peacock bass fishing.

Medium Heavy

Rod 6’6”–7’6” (baitcasting or spinning) with a reel for at least 120 m of 50–60 lb braided line. For heavier wobblers, topwater lures, jerkbaits, and jig fishing in deeper water.

Heavy for catfish and arapaima

Heavy-duty rod with a reel spooled with 100 lb braided line. 100 lb monofilament leader, 120–180 g sliding sinker, 80–100 lb steel leader, and 8/0–12/0 circle hook.

For arapaima, use a barbless 8/0 circle hook directly on the monoline, without a sinker or steel leader.

Fishing in Guyana is primarily done from a boat in jungle rivers, backwaters, and deep pools. You fish with spinning gear, topwater lures, jerkbaits, jigs, and in some cases natural bait, depending on the species and location. The methods are adapted daily based on water levels, currents, and target species, and the guides will constantly help you choose the right technique for the best possible fishing in the Amazon.

What's the weather and climate like?

The climate in Frovåg on Senja is typical for Northern Norway, with fresh winds, clear air, and shifting weather. During the fishing season from April to September, temperatures are usually between 8 and 18 degrees Celsius – but some days offer brilliant sunshine and over 20 degrees.

When the sun warms the fjords and the sea is calm, fantastic fishing days await. At the same time, the sheltered bays mean that it's almost always possible to find good fishing regardless of the weather. Feel free to pack layers and waterproof clothing, and you'll be ready for all conditions. The weather can change quickly!
