About the fishing trip

Fly fishing in Iceland with Oskar Wignäs

Stóra Laxá is one of Iceland's classic salmon rivers, offering varied fly fishing for wild Atlantic salmon in a landscape of open plains, lava formations, and deep canyons.

During the trip, we will fish Stóra Laxá Lower, where classic salmon pools alternate with flowing and more technical sections. Together with the local guides, the fishing will be adapted to water levels, weather, and where the salmon are located.

The trip is a hosted trip with Oskar Wignäs from Outside Travels. You will travel with a small group and have both Oskar and local guides on-site for assistance with technique, fly choice, and tactics.

This trip is suitable for both those who want to experience their first salmon fishing in Iceland and those who already have experience with Atlantic salmon.

Fishing during the trip

The fishing days on Stóra Laxá are shaped by the conditions in the river. Water levels, weather, and the salmon's movements determine which pools we focus on and how the fishing for the day is planned.

We fish with local guides, with one guide per two anglers, and move between different pools on Stóra Laxá Lower. This allows for varied fishing and adapting both fly choice and method to the prevailing conditions.

The pace is relaxed, and there is time to get help with casting, presentation, and tactics. The goal is for you to get the most out of your time on the river, whether it's your first salmon trip or if you've fished for salmon before.

  • Day 1

    Fly to Reykjavik. Transfer from Keflavik to your hotel in Reykjavik. Spend the evening and night in Reykjavik.

  • day 2

    We leave Reykjavik and drive to the Lodge. Fishing on the same day between 16:00 and 22:00.

  • day 3-4

    Two full days of fishing

  • day 5

    Fishing between 08:00-12:00. Lunch at the Lodge and then transfer to Keflavik for an afternoon flight home.

Salmon fishing in Stóra Laxá in Iceland

Stóra Laxá is one of Iceland's classic salmon rivers, stretching over 90 kilometers. The river flows from Lake Grænavatn through the canyons of Laxárgljúfur before continuing through the Icelandic landscape and meeting the glacial river Hvítá. Here, varied fly fishing for wild Atlantic salmon awaits in a river with many different types of pools and flowing sections.

Fishing in Stóra Laxá is divided into different sections, where Upper and Lower offer different fishing characteristics. Upper is more characterized by the river's dramatic canyons and more technical fishing, while Lower is more accessible with a large number of classic salmon pools.

On this Hosted Trip, we will be fishing Stóra Laxá Lower.

Stóra Laxá Lower

On Stóra Laxá Lower, there are over 70 marked pools distributed among only eight rods. This provides plenty of water to fish and the opportunity to switch between different types of pools and fishing situations throughout the day.

Fishing varies from fast currents and rocky pools to deeper swing pools and calmer sections. Which stretches and methods work best varies with water levels, weather, and where the salmon are located.

Surface fishing is an important part of salmon fishing in Stóra Laxá. Small dry flies and hitch flies are used to entice the salmon to the surface, while Sunray Shadow can be fished quickly over the pools. Seeing an Atlantic salmon rise and take the fly on the surface is a big part of the experience.

Lower is suitable for both those taking their first salmon fishing trip to Iceland and those who have fished Atlantic salmon before. During the trip, both local guides and our Swedish tour leader will be on site to assist with technique, fly selection, and how to fish the different pools.

What is a hosted trip?

A hosted trip is a fishing trip where an experienced tour leader accompanies you throughout the entire journey. You get support, camaraderie, and someone to share the experience with, both on the water and in the evenings after fishing.

On this hosted trip to Iceland, you will travel with Oskar Wignäs and a small group of fly fishermen. The trip includes several days of guided salmon fishing on Stóra Laxá, while also providing the security and camaraderie of having an experienced tour leader with you throughout the entire trip.

Who is Oskar Wignäs

Oskar Wignäs is the founder of Outside Travels and an experienced fly fisherman with the world as his home waters. With a deep passion for nature, fishing, and adventure, he has explored fishing destinations in, among others, Canada, Iceland, Mexico, Greenland, Bahamas and Argentina – often in pursuit of large salmon, arctic char, Steelhead, GT, and bonefish on the fly.

Since 2016, Oskar has been organizing fishing trips globally and is today a highly appreciated tour leader who is passionate about sharing his knowledge, creating security, and inspiring others on the water. He is particularly known for his ability to combine structure with adventure – a valuable trait during both tropical fishing expeditions and trips to the wilderness of North America.

Stóra Laxá - the river of dreams

In southern Iceland, Stóra Laxá flows through open landscapes, lava formations, and deep gorges. It is a river with a distinct Icelandic character, where the surroundings are a big part of the experience.

During the trip, we will fish Stóra Laxá Lower, with classic salmon pools, flowing water, and calmer sections. Fishing will be adapted to water levels and daily conditions together with the local guides and Oskar Wignäs as tour leader.

With a limited number of rods, there is plenty of space along the river. This trip is suitable for both those taking their first salmon trip to Iceland and those with previous salmon fishing experience.

Accommodation, Food, and Drink

Lower Stóra Laxá Lodge is the main base for fishing and offers a fully staffed, newly renovated lodge with river views. The accommodation is of a high standard and has both a sauna and a jacuzzi where you can relax after fishing and enjoy the view – and with a bit of luck, even the northern lights in the evenings.

The lodge has six twin rooms and one double room, a spacious dining room, comfortable communal areas, and a drying room for fishing equipment.

The food is one of the highlights of the stay. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are served every day, and in the evenings, thoughtful dinners await with quality ingredients, varied flavors, and great care in both preparation and presentation. The menu varies during the stay and maintains a level that makes dinners something to look forward to after a day by the river.

In the evenings, we gather in the dining room to enjoy good food, share the day's fishing stories, and relax together. The combination of the food, the personal service, and the riverine environment makes the time at the lodge an important part of the entire trip.
