Lofoten – Sea Fishing Among Fjords and Mountains

Join us on a fishing trip to Lofoten and Nappstraumen in Northern Norway and experience sea fishing far north of the Arctic Circle. Here, rugged mountains, islands, and fjords meet the open sea, offering excellent opportunities for fishing for halibut, cod, and coalfish.

The fishing is adapted to the weather, season, and the species you want to focus on. One day, the pursuit of large halibut may be the main focus, while the next is dedicated to cod or coalfish. It's varied sea fishing in an environment that is very typical of Lofoten, with high mountains and the open sea close by.

Nappstraumen is located in the heart of Lofoten, surrounded by high mountains, islands, and a coastal landscape that provides access to many different types of fishing waters. Its location between Vestfjorden and the outer Lofoten allows you to choose your fishing area according to wind, current, and the day's conditions.

Halibut is one of the main targets, with the possibility of catching large fish in surprisingly shallow waters. There are also cod, saithe, wolfish, and several other species that make for varied fishing. One session might be dedicated to targeted halibut fishing, while the next could be about saithe over deeper waters or cod around shallow reefs and drop-offs.

    Day 1

    The journey begins with a flight to Leknes in Lofoten. Upon arrival, you will make your way to Nappstraumen and check into your accommodation. The rest of the day is free to settle in, go through boats and equipment, and prepare everything for the upcoming days of fishing.

    Now, six full days of sea fishing in Lofoten await you. You'll depart from Nappstraumen every day and choose your fishing area based on the weather, wind, and the species you want to focus on.

    After breakfast, you leave Nappstraumen and transfer to Harstad airport for your flight home. After six days at sea, it's time to summarize the week and hopefully check in some self-caught fish for the journey home.

Fishing around Nappstraumen

Nappstraumen is located in the heart of Lofoten, with access to both Vestfjorden and the outer side of the archipelago. This allows for choosing fishing areas based on weather and wind conditions and targeting several different species throughout the season.

Halibut is one of the area's main attractions. Around Nappstraumen, there are sandy bottoms, flowing straits, ledges, and shallow plateaus where fish seek food. During parts of the season, halibut can be fished in surprisingly shallow waters, which opens up for active fishing with jigs and other lures.

Cod and saithe are also an important part of the fishing. Shallow peaks, steep drop-offs, and current-swept areas offer good opportunities for much of the season. In spring, much of the focus is on cod when the Skrei (spawning cod) comes towards Lofoten to spawn.

With your own boat, you have the freedom to adjust your days according to wind, current, season, and whatever fishing has been best at the moment.

Fishing Season

March–April
The main focus is on the Skrei. The cod come into Lofoten to spawn, and this period is suitable for those who want to focus on classic Skrei fishing.

May–June
As spring turns into summer, the fishing becomes more varied. Halibut becomes a clearer target, while cod, saithe, and catfish offer several options throughout the day.

July–August
The long and bright summer days provide plenty of time at sea. Halibut can be sought over sandy bottoms and shallower areas, while saithe and cod are fished around shallow peaks, ledges, and current-swept sections.

September–November
An interesting period for halibut, while there are still opportunities to fish for cod and saithe, among others.

In addition to the main targets, species such as catfish, haddock, and ling may appear during the trip. This allows for varying both fishing spots, methods, and species during the week.

Fisherman's cabins with a view of Nappstraumen

At the camp, you will stay in beautiful fishermen's cabins right by the sea in Skreda, in the heart of Lofoten. Here you have a view of Nappstraumen and the boats are close to the accommodation. The camp is located about five kilometers from Leknes airport and approximately ten minutes from Leknes, where there are grocery stores and other services.

Fishermen's Cabins – 4 beds
The classic fishermen's cabins have been renovated but have retained the traditional Lofoten style. They feature a living room, kitchen, bathroom, and two bedrooms with a total of four beds. The accommodation also has a TV and fiber-optic Wi-Fi, and the jetty with the boats is right below.

Hildurbua and Nappstraumen Seafront Cabin – 6 beds
More spacious fishermen's cabins with three bedrooms and space for up to six people. Here you stay with a view of Nappstraumen and plenty of space for the group. Nappstraumen Seafront Cabin is 72 square meters and has a living room, kitchen, bathroom, and a large sea-facing terrace.

Lofoten Rorbu Lodge – 8 beds
A larger option with four bedrooms and space for up to eight people. It features large common areas, a terrace, TV, and fiber-optic Wi-Fi, as well as a view of Nappstraumen.

Lofoten Seaview Villa – 9 beds

Boats for sea fishing in Nappstraumen

At Nappstraumen, stable aluminum boats adapted for sea fishing around Lofoten are used. The camp has several models from manufacturers such as Alumarin, Arronet, and Kværnø, with engines up to 200 hp and plenty of space for smaller fishing teams.

The boats are equipped with a GPS plotter, echo sounder, VHF, and safety equipment. The plotter contains waypoints to fishing spots around the camp, making it easier to find different areas and start fishing.

Before the first trip, you will receive an introduction to the boat, equipment, and the area. The boats are also equipped with tracking systems, allowing the camp to monitor their position at sea.

The larger models can accommodate 2–5 anglers, while the Kværnø 630 is suitable for groups of up to four people. Life jackets are included, and at the pier, there is a gas station, filleting table, freezer room, and the possibility to dry equipment after fishing.

Equipment for sea fishing in Lofoten

Complete fishing equipment and flotation suits are available for rent on site. If you wish to bring your own equipment, we recommend packing for both heavy sea fishing and lighter spin fishing.

Fishing Equipment
A 6–7 ft sea fishing rod in the 20–30 lbs class works well for cod, halibut, and pollock. Consider supplementing with a lighter rod for active spin fishing. A sea reel or spinning reel in size 6000–8000 with approximately 300 meters of braided line of 0.28–0.40 mm is a good starting point.

For the tackle box, we recommend jigs of various weights, pirks, and rigs adapted to the species you want to fish for. Also bring stronger leader material for halibut fishing.

Clothing
The weather in Lofoten can change quickly, even during the summer. Wool base layers, wool socks, a hat, buff, gloves, and waterproof boots or sturdy shoes are good to bring. Flotation suits are available for rent at the camp.

Good to bring
Polarized sunglasses, a thermos, a filleting knife, multi-pliers, freezer bags, sunscreen, and a water bottle.

    Common questions before a fishing trip to Nappstraumen

    When is the best time for sea fishing in Nappstrumen?

    It depends on what type of fishing you're looking for. March and April are the months for classic skrei fishing for large cod, while May to October offers a more varied sea fishing with halibut, coalfish, and cod, among others. For many who want to combine several species, summer and early autumn are good choices, while those who primarily want to fish for skrei should choose spring.

    What fish can I catch?

    The most common target species are halibut, cod, and saithe. Depending on the season and fishing method, there are also opportunities to catch wolfish, haddock, ling, plaice, and redfish, among others. In spring, Lofoten is particularly known for its cod fishing, while halibut is one of the main targets during the rest of the sea fishing season.

    Do I need a fishing license?

    No, for regular sea fishing with a rod in Norway, you do not need a fishing license. However, Norwegian regulations apply to things like minimum sizes, protected species, and which fish may be kept. The camp will inform you of current regulations before you go fishing.

    How much fish can I take home?

    In 2026, you may take up to 15 kg of fish or fish products per person out of Norway, a maximum of twice per calendar year. From January 1, 2027, the quota will be reduced to 10 kg per person, still a maximum of twice per year.

    The camp is a registered tourist fishing operation and issues the necessary documentation for you to take your catch home.

    Is there Wi-Fi available?

    Yes, Wi-Fi is available at the accommodation.

    How do you fish in Nappstrumen?

    Fishing takes place from your own boat, and you choose the location and method according to species, weather, and current. Cod and coalfish are primarily caught with jigs and pirks around reef tops, drop-offs, and current-swept areas. For halibut, large rubber jigs and baitfish are effective, often fished while drifting over sandy bottoms and ledges.

    In shallower areas, you can also spin fish for halibut with jigs, a much more active fishing style where bites often occur close to the boat. If you want to vary your fishing, there are also opportunities to target species such as wolfish, plaice, haddock, and redfish.
