In Alaska, the season determines which fish you will have on the end of your line. From June to September, all five Pacific salmon species migrate upstream, but they arrive one after another. Rainbow trout follow the salmon and have their own peaks. If you are planning your trip around a particular species, the time of summer makes all the difference.

The trip at a glance

  • Destination: fly-in lodge in south-central Alaska, approximately 45 minutes by seaplane from Anchorage
  • Season: June to September
  • Species: all five Pacific salmon species, rainbow trout, grayling and Dolly Varden
  • Method: fly fishing and spin fishing from a boat or while wading
  • Fishing days: six full days
  • Accommodation: eight separate cabins with private bathrooms

June to mid-July: king salmon and the largest rainbow trout

Early summer is king salmon season. They often weigh over 15 kilos and make long runs, so two-handed rods or powerful single-handed rods are needed. King salmon are fished with large streamers, tube flies, wobblers and heavy spinners.

At the same time, from early to mid-June, smolt migrate out of the rivers. This is when the largest rainbow trout are often caught, and streamers and fish imitations are highly effective.

Mid-July and August: sockeye, chum and pink salmon

From mid-July, the variety begins. Sockeye migrate upstream in large numbers and are primarily caught on smaller, discreet patterns and floss flies. It is technical fishing, but rewarding once you get the hang of it.

From late July, chum and pink salmon begin to appear. Chum salmon, or dog salmon, are aggressive and readily strike large, colorful streamers and spin flies. Pink salmon are smaller but very abundant. Small streamers, spinners and lighter lures work well, making pink salmon a great species for beginners and families.

Late July to September: silver salmon and rainbow trout feeding on eggs

For many, late summer is the highlight. Silver salmon, or coho, arrive from late July and are actively fished with streamers, surface flies, spinners and wobblers. They are known for hard runs and high leaps.

During the same period, rainbow trout fishing reaches its peak. When the salmon spawn, large rainbow trout gather to feed on eggs and dead salmon, and they readily take egg patterns, flesh flies and larger nymphs. During quieter periods, there can also be excellent dry-fly fishing.

Species to expect alongside salmon

In addition to salmon and rainbow trout, many of the waters hold grayling and Dolly Varden, adding variety between the more intense fishing sessions.
